the Existentialism Work in progress

Unfortunately for this project we are not ready with some of the feature on our drawing. So we decided to show in a picture which has been scanned from the sketch. We're doing a human's chest, with the collage way, there are 2 doors/windows opened so that we could see what's inside of it. Inside there, there are different kinds of pictures which symbolize everything that most people think about, such as their needs, their wants, their fantasy, and the other most desire things. Eventhough in the reality it's almost impossible for him to get it. We also think of making the insides(pictures and the walls around) smudge, and that mean sof make things look like they are coming out.

The difficulity that we face is just on how locating the doors so it would looks like connected well to the chest layer.

  1. The picture is really hard to see so I can't really understand it even with the description. So you're basically saying that the guy has all these dreams inside of him but in reality can't achieve them? You might want to show it in a different way maybe because from the picture you can understand that dreams are inside of him but the ability of not being able to achieve them doesn't seem to show.

  2. I like the idea. Its like showing what people want and even tho most people want the same things, we never think about it.

For the backgroud, red might feel like an agressive color, so you might want to pick something more neutral so that the viewers eyes stay on the body and collage.

Its smart that your not going to include any of the persons head, arms or legs, because this helps the viewer feel that it represents everyone, but im wordering if you will try to impose a gender or ethnicity for the torso.

    Good job! :o)

  3. I think that you should not smudge the pictures of the dream from the inside of the chest. It would not be sufficient with your idea. The doors is still making me confused, so work on a more clear visual representation.

My suggestion is if your change your idea around and maybe use a camera taking pictures of the dreams, I don't know how you might show that. I also don't get why you are using a chest as a storage of those dreams. Make your idea more clear and use appropriate symbols for representation. I'd like to see how you put it together in your final artwork.

  4. This is somewhat of a confusing idea, but can be very effective if you pull it off well.

It's been mentioned before that you should use a very neutral colour (light grey, for example).

Remember not to make the inside of the chest too cluttered because it may be hard to focus on one thing. Try not to take multiple small things and fit as many as you can in there. An interesting idea might be to make the most important things the biggest, and then having smaller, less important things, be smaller.

Since this is supposed to target everyone (I would assume you're trying to show some of the more universal aspirations/desires), it would probably be best not to show any other parts other than the chest. It would probably be better to show a male chest because of the fact that many people would misinterpret the picture if you used a female chest (in a sexist way, not a sexual way). That could also be said if you used a very dark skin tone. Try to keep the skin tone very natural (a white person would probably be considered the most 'natural' skin colour).

I think it's an interesting idea, build will need to be executed well to effectively get your message across. Regardless, I'm sure it'll turn out great.

  5. I don't understand what you are trying to go for in this piece. Maybe it is the way you are explaining it or because I do not have a good visual to look at but either way I think the idea needs some work. I do not get a sense of existentialism from the idea other than the fact that you are going to have picture in the chest which symbolize something.

I like how you are using a chest as the body part to hold the collage, but i think you should try and take certain images and replace them for body parts. For instance find a picture you think symbolizes the heart and place that instead. Have the collage in the chest does not show much meaning.

  6. I am having a hard timr trying to understand what you're trying to do with the concept......oh,oh, nevermind, haha. Now that I went back up and took another look at it, I got the drawing and the things that you're trying to do with it.

Anyhow, I'm just wondering what you're going to put in the chest. I know that the wants, needs and all those good stuff are going to go on there, but specifically what is what I'm saying.

I'm only seeing the chest...like nothing else as in the arms...neck...head...I guess it'd easier to let the viewers to know that it is a chest of a man by adding some arms to it...Just a thought.

    KEEP IT UP!

  7. I think the idea is really effective. Executing the collage perhaps will be really time consuming, but don't give up! I believe with hardwork and persistent, your assignment will deserve the technical quality it deserves to correlate with the really cool conceptual idea. What I want you to think about is whether the compilation of images will have hard edges or soft edges?
My only worry right now is your use of smudging. I think you should motion, or glauscian blur instead of manual smudging to provide a more consistent "popping out" effect.
Good luck and don't give up because it will be a long way!!

  8. This idea i find is really interesting because of its sciencce/biology mixed with psychology take on existentialism which many are doing abstractly. It is a nice break and a literal sense of teh opening body and desires found within in. What i think you could consider is (or if you have already) make the open flaps fold-able(if thats a word...) sort of like a book so maybe when the viewers see this piece of work it can be a surprising experience!

you sed "Eventhough in the reality it's almost impossible for him to get it" when i see this idea i can see the portrayal of the idea of the desires needs and the stereotypical thing people think about but i think it needs some kind of twist to achieve the idea of "in reality its impossible for him to get"

Also to take in consideration whose body are we talking here? a male age 50 a male age 5 a female age 20 etc.. the desires for each age have a huge difference especially if your going to try and generalize their wants. If youre having trouble creating this 3D effect on photoshop and are unfamilar, its fine to ask people around! and if not, i dont see a reason why you cant take the 3D idea to a literal sense, this project can be 3D 2D whatever as long as it has computer generated components!

other than that a bit confusing but nonetheless interesting concept and perspective on existentialism!
